Target: Arctic Ocean by Moto (and Boat, and Airplane) ‘08

Ride a motorcycle 10,000 miles to swim in the Arctic Ocean?!? Are you NUTS?

Apparently so.

It all started with a dream of seeing the northern lights. And then, touring Alaska by motorcycle. Of course, as long as I’m in the neighborhood, a quick swim in the Arctic Ocean would be good, too. Nice dream.

Uh oh. Now there’s a map:

How to Buy the Best Congas for the Least Pesos (Long)

If you haven’t read yet what I’m up to with the Conguero Project, here’s the quick version: I’ve set a goal to play three songs onstage with a Latin/jazz/fusion band by March ‘09, about a year from now (for fun only — I’m an Amateur!). Since I don’t own drums yet, I’ve been researching and have come up with some good tips for drummers buying drums.

What to Look For

It’s a Shell Game

Conga drum bodies or “shells” are typically built of either fiberglass or laminated wood. It’s interesting to note that shell materials create very different sound characteristics. Personally, I like the sound and looks of the higher end (i.e. expensive) fiberglass drums like these:

The Conguero Project

Recently I had the great fortune to see Richie Flores play congas with the Dave Valentin Jazz Band. Richie is terrifically exciting to watch, and he’s one of the most respected conga players in the world. I have to admit, staying seated during the show was really difficult! I was mesmerized by his speed and fluidity; totally inspired and completely hooked!

Here’s a YouTube video of Richie:

Well, after seeing Richie Flores, and in the greatest spirit of being an amateur…

One who pursues an objective enthusiastically and for no gain other than love of learning and experience

…I decided it’s time to finally give in, follow the inspiration, and learn the congas. So, I’m taking this year to practice with a good teacher, and then by March ‘09 play congas in a performance with other musicians. Specifically, I want to play three songs onstage (for fun only — I’m an Amateur!) with a Latin/jazz/fusion band. It’s a big goal, particularly since I’ve never really played congas, don’t know anyone in a Latin band, and currently I don’t have any drums.

First up is to buy some drums. See my next post for tips on how to get the most/best congas for the least money.

Thanks for reading,

Chuck
